Task 2.1 ~ Research into existing products - GTA: Vice City advert
The genre of this game is called 'free roam' and it allows the user to travel the in game world, doing as they please and completing various missions as and when they please. The advert heavily portrays the world available to the gamers as the entire advert consists of various shots of gameplay. Some consist of the vehicles that can be used in the game which appeals to the audience as they can use these vehicles in ways they don't normally use in other games.
It also contains risque gameplay which contains scantily clad women. This keeps to the convention thet 'sex sells' and people will be willing to pay for games that contain content that is age restricted. Scenes of violence are also shown during the advert and is also another sensitive topic that people are willing to pay for. These two topics alone are one thing that has made the Grand Theft Auto series hugely popular.
A split-screen effect is in use at a point during the advert. This is reminiscent of widely popular American crime/thriller films. This is particularly appropriate as Grand Theft Auto is a game series that is undeniably similar to a number of themes in some of these movies, especially the crime and thriller aspects to the game.
The music throughout is also stereotypically linked to this era and genre with it being linked with the wealthy, 'high end' lifestyle of the character in this game. This would appeal to the audience as this sort of lifestyle of criminality, clubbing and sex is something society rarely accepts but is believably highly enjoyable.
