Conventions of contempary music video

Conventions of contempary music video

1.     Performance based e.g. live band performance

2.     Narrative based e.g. where a storyline is evident

3.     Abstract/Artistic music videos e.g. creative, artistic music videos – unconventional, innovative

Massive attack – Teardrop and Gotye – Somebody that I used to know are both examples of abstract/artistic

Leftfield – Off centre, not normal

Beyoncé – Irreplaceable

4 scenes where she is singing.

1.     House

2.     Garden

3.     With the band

4.     Walk in wardrobe

Mix of performance and narrative based.

Justin Timberlake – Mirrors

-         For William and Sadie (A tribute to his grandparents)

-         2 old people – Couple in the video (his grandparents)

-         Young couple meet in a bar/diner

-         Clothes and style are iconic of the 1950’s

-         Fun house scene – looking back at their past

-         We see the couple at different stages throughout their lives

-         The cross on the old man’s hand is the same as the young man’s hand – we discover they are the same people

-         She closes the book, could be a comment on closing the past

-         The ring never went on her ring finger – they never got married

-         Crying – she wants to get married, he doesn’t. Possibly the trauma of losing her partner.

Good music videos cut on the beat.
